Sutton United full-back Dan Wishart reckons his team-mates are still adapting to life on a 3G pitch.

United and Welling United played out a 0-0 on Saturday at the Lane as Paul Doswell’s side continued their pre-season campaign.

It was a match that rarely sparked into life, and although Sutton United dominated their Conference Premier opponents, they failed to seriously test the Wings keeper.

Wishart said: “It was a good run out for us and we played well. I thought the subs in particular were impressive.

“We’re doing alright in pre-season and still adapting to the pitch and learning together.”

After only managing a 15th place finish in the Conference South last year, Wishart is confident the team can do a lot better this time round.

He added: “We had a difficult year last year and we have to do better.

Stretch out: Ross Stearn in action for Sutton United in the weekend's 0-0 draw against Welling United

“We’ve got a new, fresh squad now and we’re really excited about what we can achieve.”

The first half was fairly evenly contested, with both sides reduced to long range efforts.

Craig Dundas sent an effort just too high, while the busy Ross Stearn got on the end of a great pass from captain Glen Southam, but his shot was saved low down by King.

Welling's best effort came from George Porter, whose volley from outside the area was comfortably saved by Ross Worner.

Sutton came out the sharper of the two sides in the second half, especially after the introduction of Micky Spillane and Tom Bolarinwa.

Stearn again had another shot saved, while Wishart sent a free kick just wide of the Welling goal.

Bolarinwa was having a huge impact with his pace and it almost resulted in a goal late on.

After a lung busting run to the by-line, he pulled the ball back for Southam, but the captain could only mishit his shot, leaving the game to finish goalless.

Sutton United continue their pre-season at Carshalton Athletic on Tuesday night – to compete for the Sutton Guardian Cup.
