What is held for the future? Are we going to sit back and relax? Are we going to make a difference to somebody’s life? Are we going to make new friends? Perhaps fall in love? Do we feel any of the above questions apply to us? Will the next morning be our last?

As this will be the last post until the New Year many questions have been flying through my head in a rather superfluous manner. Perhaps down to my young age the future seems rather bleak and blurry in the distance. I’m storming down a country lane at 300Mph, the trees pass by in milliseconds, the road is a complete blur and the faces of people who I have met at times during the year only watch me for a fraction of a second before disappearing into the beyond. There are many directions which I could turn down but blindly the car speeds on, faster and faster into a vortex of confusion which is almost impossible to shift.

There is no doubt about it that growing up has to be one of the wildest rides life provides, it torments some and inspires others but everybody else rides on its back obliviously. Thinking back to December 2006 my circumstances have definitely changed. For a start I’m single now, made new friends, learnt new information, changed my beliefs, found new heroes, plus much more. I’d be lying if I were to say the whole year was brilliant – not to seem pessimistic – some of the decisions I have made and others have at times hurt. Equally I have enjoyed learning more about myself as a person. The freedom of choice which every human being in the world should have is a great privilege to explore our world in more depth.

An excellent title for my own website (www.mikewhite.co.uk ) would be “Superfluous Thoughts” and you may even see the new title implemented soon. Superfluous is a brilliant word to describe ‘going over the top’, ‘irrelevant information’ or ‘excessively needless’ and this is exactly what a human mind should be and what this blog imitates. The world has got to a stage where it would be very easy to sit back and enjoy the ride but there are many questions yet to still be answered. This is where the word ‘philosophy’ comes to play; Greek in origin ‘philosophy’ means “the love of wisdom”. If you have read any philosophy books in the past by CS Lewis, Richard Dawkins or perhaps heard of Plato, Aristotle or even Socrates you will know philosophy is of complete excess. Being the superfluous excess are great minds, sometimes wacky but still great – let’s embrace the superfluous ramble behind the heart beat of life.

For some reason or another philosophy seems to have been labelled a taboo subject for most young people these days. Just look at the massive drop of religious belief in this country caused by ignorance of the subject. Not to mistake theology with philosophy, theology is Greek for ‘The Science of God’, but still, behind the theology are very prominent philosophical ideas. Personally a belief in God is not something I can subscribe to but the mere fact many teenagers ignore the subject of God whilst listening to the music of many fundamentalist atheists such as Dennett, Dawkins and Hitchens is a not a good thing.

Although I cannot tell what my life path for next year will be like at least I can still imagine. Let’s all return back to the world of dreams, escape into the imagination where life rarely goes wrong. For a start the podcast I am involved in (www.adifferentspin.co.uk ) will reach new heights, I hope to finally get an article published in print, perhaps a new relationship with a girl which actually works and finally for everybody’s dreams in the world to also come true.

The best way to tread the path of life is to follow your dreams, follow what you enjoy, persist and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer; you will soon reach your dreams.
