A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a pensioner was seriously injured by car in Sutton.

Police cordoned off Brighton Road for more than five hours after being called to the scene of the the collision at 10.44am today.

Paramedics also attended and took the woman, believed to be in her 70s, to St George's Hospital.

A London Ambulance Service (LAS) spokeswoman said: "She was taken to hospital as a priority with head and shoulder injuries."

The woman is thought to have been walking on the pavement when she was struck by an Audi near to a BP petrol station. 

Police said the woman's injuries were serious.

Paul Brown, who was nearby at the time of the crash, said: "I heard two bangs and then a woman screaming.

"There was a car on the wrong side of the road mounted partly up the curb, facing towards Sutton town centre.

"The injured lady was lying next to it being comforted by members of the public."

He added: "What was once a busy noisy road has now become eerily silent."
