GENGHIS KHAN

When one visits a restaurant called Genghis Khan, one might expect to be served Mongolian food. In fact, this established restaurant in New Malden serves Korean food, writes Richard Hanrahan

The restaurant, which was taken over two years ago by its South Korean owner Chan Lee, is highly popular with the thriving South Korean community which has settled in New Malden. They love being able to enjoy authentic Korean food at a reasonable price.

However, anyone interested in sampling this unique style of cuisine should make a visit to the restaurant.

I had never sampled Korean food before my recent meal there with a friend. Having now experienced the cuisine, I would describe it as being influenced by Chinese food but different in terms of taste, texture and smell.

Chan explained that South Korean food tends to stick to the "three S code of being either sweet, salty or spicy." All Korean food will contain one of these tastes, he explained, as his countrymen (and women) love food which is full of flavour.

We were certainly impressed with our meal. I chose the fried prawn in a spicy sauce while my friend had fried chicken in chilli sauce. Both came with a mix of stir fried vegetables and rice. Diners should note that main courses come in either a regular or large size.

Particularly popular are the seafood dishes prepared by chef Kangmum Bae. Some of the more unusual dishes include braised sea cucumber and mixed fried seafood with shark fin soup. The average price of a main course is £9.50.

To accompany your meal, there is also a choice of beers, wines and spirits including some Korean wines.

The décor is pleasant, modern and comfortable and the restaurant has a friendly atmosphere. It seats around 40 and there is a separate function room for around 20.

Genghis Khan is open from noon to 3pm and from 6pm to 10pm Monday to Friday, and from noon until 10pm at weekends. Last orders are at 10pm but the restaurant only closes when guests have left.
