An electrician who has seen friends and family killed through cancer is planning a charity football match.

In May 2014, Neil Wadsworth, a self-employed electrician from Worcester Park, came up with the idea to host a football match in aid of Cancer Research with his friends and family at Banstead Athletics ground.

Mr Wadsworth raised £700 and attracted around 40 spectators to the match.

The 26-year-old was inspired to start donating to Cancer Research after several friends and family members became ill with the disease. In particular, his best friend’s mother passed away four years ago.

His closeness with the family encouraged him to pursue the fundraising.

He said: “The reason for donating, like most others, is because I know several close friends and their family who have sadly passed away from cancer and I felt I should do what I could.”

Mr Wadsworth, who runs NW Electrical, has decided to host this charity football event annually, but wants it to be bigger and better.

He said: “This year I am aiming to raise a minimum of £1,000.” The desired date is May 31 at a venue in Cheam.

He said: “I’m hoping for a bigger turn out – more money raised and an all-round better day than last year, including a raffle with prizes from shops in Cheam, if we can.

“I thought it would be a nice thing to do and let people see that even a small business like myself can contribute and do their bit.”
