A scarred attacker tried to reach through the window of a car and steal keys from the ignition before being fought off by a mother out with her daughter.

The 52-year-old woman, who strained her wrist fending off the man, was sitting in a silver Renault Clio with her 14-year-old daughter.

The attempted robbery happened in Lower Road, Sutton, yesterday at about 8.30pm, Sutton police said.

The man is described as white, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5ft 7in and of medium build.

He was wearing a blue or green hooded top and jeans that appeared to have been bleached.

Officers said he had a distinctive half-moon scar from his lip to his cheek.

Following the attempted robbery the scarred man left and was seen walking into the Lord Nelson pub opposite.
